Indications

Cream or ointment:

By eliminating bacteria, the antiseptic medication viodine 5% ointment is used to treat minor burns, infections, and wounds. It oxidizes cellular components and iodinates proteins to render them inactive. Before and after surgery, patients' skin as well as the hands of the healthcare provider are cleaned with 5% viodine ointment.

Pharmacology

Povidone Iodine is an amalgam of iodine and povidone, an organic polymer. Povidone Iodine is superior to regular elemental iodine because of this polymerization. By gradually releasing elemental iodine, it increases the duration of iodine's germicidal activity. As a result, its toxicity is lower than that of elemental iodine. It quickly produces microbicidal activity against viruses, fungi/yeast, protozoa, and both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Also, it is sporicidal. It is the only microbicide with such a wide range of effectiveness. It is non-staining, has a sustained germicidal effect, and is still effective in the presence of water, soap, blood, pus, serum, and mucosal secretions.

Dosage & Administration

Cream or ointment:

• Apply once or twice daily, or at dressing changes, for a maximum of 14 days to treat the infection.
• Apply once or twice a week for however long is necessary to prevent infection. The affected skin can be dressed with a bandage or dressing after it has been cleaned and dried.

Interaction

It exhibits interaction with a strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal. Use with concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit a hypothyroidic effect.

Contraindications

It can cause hypersensitivity reactions. Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders (in particular nodular colloid goiter, endemic goiter, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis) or those receiving lithium therapy is to be avoided. In severely burnt patients serum iodide levels should be assessed due to possible hepatic and renal impairment. Povidone Iodine Powder should not be used in serious cavities and in Children under the age of 2 years.

Side Effects

Povidone Iodine may cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. The application of povidone Iodine to severe burns or to large areas otherwise denuded of skin may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function. It may interfere with thyroid function tests.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Povidone Iodine Cream, Solution & Powder are not recommended for use during pregnancy because of the possibility of absorption of sufficient iodine to affect the fetal thyroid. American Academy of Pediatrics considers that the use of Povidone-Iodine is usually compatible with breastfeeding. Consult a Registered Physician. Regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash and Surgical Scrub should also be avoided in pregnant and lactating women.

Precautions & Warnings

Cream or ointment: Consult a Registered Physician in the event of deep or puncture wounds or significant burns. Consult a Registered Physician if any of the following occur: persistent or increasing redness, irritation, swelling, or pain; or any signs of infection.

Store below 30°C temperature and protect from light & moisture. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
