Benzapen Injection kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.

✔️ Pharmacology

Benzathine penicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which halts the final transpeptidation step in bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death as the cell wall breaks down.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Benzapen Injection

Treatment of infections:
0.3 to 1.2 million units every five to seven days.

Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever:
1.2 million units every three weeks.

Specific dosages for streptococcal infections:

• Group A β-hemolytic streptococcal infections: Single intramuscular dose of 600,000 units.
• Prevention of rheumatic fever: Monthly injections of 1.2 million units.
• Acute otitis media: Single injection of 6 million units.
• Early syphilis: Single dose of 2.4 million units.
• Late syphilis: 2.4 million units weekly for three weeks.
• Neurosyphilis: 2 to 4 million units intravenously every 4 hours for 10 days, followed by 2.4 million units intramuscularly weekly for three weeks.
• Congenital syphilis: 50,000 units per kg intramuscularly in a single dose.
