✔️ Dosage & Administration

For Duodenal & Gastric Ulcers, Chronic Gastritis:

Adults: 2 g twice daily (morning and bedtime), or 1 g four times daily (one hour before meals and at bedtime).

Maximum daily dose: 8 g.

Treatment may continue up to 12 weeks in resistant cases.

For Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis:

Adults: 1 g, 4 to 6 times daily, orally or via nasogastric tube.

Follow each nasogastric dose with 10 ml of water to prevent clogging.

Duration: As long as stress ulcer risk factors persist (typically not exceeding 14 days).

Take on an empty stomach. Avoid antacids within 30 minutes of taking Ulfix.

Children (<14 years): Safety and efficacy not established.

Elderly: Use the lowest effective dose; no specific adjustment required.

Renal Impairment: Use cautiously due to the risk of aluminum accumulation.

✔️ Side Effects

Common Adverse Reactions:

• Headache (3.4%)
• Nausea, abdominal pain (2.3%)
• Constipation, diarrhea, urticaria (1.1%)

Others (Rare or Undefined Frequency):

• Dizziness, dry mouth, flatulence, indigestion, insomnia, vomiting, vertigo
• Bezoar formation (especially in patients with impaired gastric motility or on tube feeding)
• Hyperglycemia in diabetic patients

✔️ Drug Interactions

Ulfix may impair the absorption of several medications, including:

• Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Tetracyclines, Ketoconazole, Sulpiride, Digoxin, Warfarin, Phenytoin, Theophylline, Levothyroxine, Quinidine, and H2 blockers.
• To minimize interaction:
• Maintain a 2-hour interval between Ulfix and the above medications.
• Avoid co-administration with citrate-based preparations, which may enhance aluminum absorption.
• Separate Ulfix and enteral feeding by at least 1 hour to prevent bezoar formation.

✔️ Overdose

Overdose is generally well tolerated. Minor symptoms such as nausea, abdominal discomfort, or vomiting may occur. Animal studies show low toxicity even at high doses.

✔️ Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Sucralfate or any component of the formulation.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in renal impairment due to the risk of aluminum toxicity (osteomalacia, encephalopathy, anemia).
• Regular monitoring of serum aluminum, calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase is advised in long-term or high-dose therapy.
• Avoid combining with other aluminum-containing products.
• Risk of bezoar formation in patients with delayed gastric emptying or on enteral feeding.
• Use with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding; safety not well established.
