✅ Description:
Gavilac (Anised) is a unique formulation combining two antacids (Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium Alginate).
Its dual action works by:
- Neutralizing excess stomach acid – providing fast relief from pain and burning.
- Forming a protective alginate raft over stomach contents – reducing acid reflux into the esophagus.
- The alginate raft floats on gastric contents for up to 4 hours, shielding the esophagus from acid, pepsin, and bile.
In severe reflux, the raft itself may reflux into the esophagus, acting as a demulcent.
Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate enhance acid neutralization for rapid symptom control.
The action is physical, not systemic, since absorption into the bloodstream is not required.

- Pregnancy: Clinical and post-marketing data show no risk to fetus or neonate; can be used if clinically necessary.
- Breastfeeding: No adverse effects on breastfed infants; considered safe.
- Fertility: No evidence of adverse effects on human fertility.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
Each 20 mL suspension contains 254.5 mg sodium and 260 mg calcium → caution in patients with:
- Salt-restricted diet (e.g., CHF, renal impairment)
- Hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, or recurrent kidney stones
- Chewable tablets contain 75 mg calcium each.
- Not recommended in children <12 years, except under medical supervision.
- Contains aspartame → contraindicated in phenylketonuria.
- Avoid prolonged use (>7 days) without medical consultation.
- May mask symptoms of more serious GI disorders.
- Avoid in renal impairment or hypophosphatemia.
- Rare risk of allergic reactions.
